Customer Requirements
Operating one of the largest freight and passenger services in Australia, Queensland Rail was searching for a point switching technology that could deliver low-cost and low-maintenance performance, function on all types of lines, and operate effectively and reliably in extreme conditions. Point switching technology is used to safely change the direction of railway turnouts to allow trains to change tracks. The 220 kilometre Goonyella line links 15 coalmines in Queensland's north-eastern coalfields. Up to 24 freight trains run on the line each day, transporting coal to two ports near Mackay.
Solution
Queensland Australia installed the Siemens S 700 K swing nose point machine on its 220 kilometre Goonyella line – the first installation of this point machine in Queensland. Installed in more than 20,000 locations worldwide, the S 700 K point machine offers low lifecycle costs due to high reliability, can be used for any points of any type, reduces repair times, can be modified to handle various tasks, and can be use for main-line, mass transit and high-speed lines.
