Customer Requirements
The Barron Gorge Hydro Power Station was commissioned in 1963 and supplies electricity to 36,000 homes in the North Queensland region. Stanwell Corporation, owner of Barron Gorge, needed to refurbish the plant to extend its operating lifetime. The challenge for Siemens was to retrofit and refurbish the power station with particular consideration to the sensitivities of the plant's location in a World Heritage listed area.
Solution
We supplied two 30 megawatt hydro generating units and worked closely with Stanwell to review the complete mechanical, electrical and automation systems to deliver a turnkey solution that has extended the operating life of the plant for a further 40 years.
