Customer Requirements
The Victorian Government needs to recycle water and also reduce ocean outfalls of effluent. The opportunity existed to serve both purposes by assisting the Gippsland Water Factory Alliance (GWFA) which will treat up to 35 million litres daily (MLD) of effluent (residential and industrial) and recycle within the Gippsland region. The best available technology was required, at an affordable cost. Siemens' challenge was to beat entrenched competitors with pre-existing relationships – to convince the GWFA technical team that the Memcor solution was a superior offering.
Solution
Memcor is a Siemens-owned brand that supplies membrane-based systems for water purification and reuse. Membranes represent a more environmentally sustainable, cheaper and flexible option than other forms of water treatment. The membrane bioreactor (MBR) system removes cryptosporidium, giardia, bacteria, turbidity and suspended solids without the need for chemical pre-treatment.
Benefits
Our solution will:
- Be integral to the Gippsland Water Factory Alliance, the largest undertaking of its kind in Australia
- Be similar to an installation at North Head (for Sydney Water), which already saves over two million litres daily
- Treat up to 35 million litres daily, using the Memcor system
- Return a minimum of eight million litres of Class A recycled water daily
