Success Story
Accurately monitoring and controlling all plant and equipment and producing high-quality desalinated water
Customer Requirements
Perth’s climate is becoming drier and stream flows into dams have reduced by two-thirds in the past 30 years. Major new water sources able to be quickly developed were called for. The Perth Seawater Desalination Plant at Kwinana ensures that 17% of Perth’s water is now secured, regardless of climate. The challenge was to reduce the amount of copper cabling and connections, thereby reducing capital costs and improving reliability.
Solution

Our automation technology provided the opportunity to greatly reduce the enormous quantity of copper cabling and connections normally required for a plant of this scale. The quantity of copper has been reduced by using intelligent communications and fibre-optic cable. Much less cable in the plant results in lower capital costs and improved reliability. Using a combination of leading-edge software, hardware and diagnostics, plant operators can predict maintenance needs more efficiently than previously available. With the availability of increased accuracy and expanded diagnostic information, the plant has a reduced risk of downtime.
Benefits
Our solution:
- Greatly reduced the quantity of copper cabling and connections
- Improved reliability and reduced costs
- Enabled the plant to more reliably operate its business, which provides 130 million litres of desalinated water a day, eliminating the need for severe summer water restrictions
