Customer Requirements
Bio-sludge is the heavier material collected in the sewage treatment process. The captured sludge is stabilised in anaerobic digesters which produce bio-gas. Bio-gas is mostly methane, a major greenhouse gas. Sydney Water's challenge was to store bio-gas – which could potentially be used for internal plant power generation and other purposes.
Solution
Siemens Water Technologies combines a number of industry leading-companies – Memcor, Wallace & Teirnan, Stranco, Envirex, Davco, Davis and others – to offer a complete water management solution. The Dystor solution looks like a futuristic dome but it is actually an 18-metre diameter stretched membrane that provides an oxygen-free environment for the storage of methane produced during the sewage "digestion" process.
Benefits
Our solution:
- Was cheaper and more efficient than alternatives
- Enabled three times more gas storage capacity than other products available
- Required less maintenance and lower set-up costs
- Resulted in lower maintenance costs, due to the membranes being UV and abrasion resistant
