Success Story
Forming a joint partnership to construct two 30-megawatt cogeneration power plants at Condong Sugar Mill site
Customer Requirements
The challenge was to increase throughput from the Condong and Broadwater sugar mills and provide for an efficient use of bagasse, a sugar cane by-product.
Solution
We recommended four 630kW, 140 Amp, 6.6kV output Perfect Harmony Gen 3 Variable Speed Drives (VSD) to run the four crushing mills at Condong and one 900kW, 200 Amp, 6.6kV Perfect Harmony VSD for the mill drive at the Broadwater Sugar Mill. Unlike many other MV drives, the Gen3 VSDs can be connected directly to the 11kV supply via a circuit breaker. The Harmony range of VSDs has an integral transformer as part of the complete VSD line-up and requires no separate additional step-down transformer.
Eliminating the use of steam in various parts of the plant enabled steam-generating capacity to be released for use in the production of electricity from the company’s steam driven generators. This release was achieved by removing inefficient smaller steam turbines from the milling train and replacing these turbines with variable frequency-controlled 6.6kV electric motors.
Benefits
Our solution resulted in:
- A more efficient use of a renewable by-product of the sugar process
- Increased electricity generation
- Economic benefits to the customer, consumers and the environment
