Siemens has equipped two new embedded industrial PCs for rough industrial environments with the powerful Intel Core 2 Duo processor – the Simatic IPC427C compact Microbox PC, and the Simatic HMI IPC477C Panel PC, which comes with a Human Machine Interface (HMI) panel.
These industrial PCs are designed for maintenance-free and continuous 24-hour operation, even in the toughest environments, with high capacity for withstanding harsh temperature, vibration, shock and EMC (electromagnetic compatibility).
The space-saving, fanless PCs are suitable for communication tasks, measuring and open/closed-loop control, as well as for operator control and visualisation, for example, directly at the machine in wind power stations, or on ships or boats. Neither of the industrial PCs require any maintenance, and they both work at ambient temperatures of 0 to 50 degrees Celsius.
Compared to the preceding models, (namely the 427B Microbox PC and the 477B Panel PC), the new devices are twice as powerful, depending on the actual features provided. Thanks to its compact dimensions (of 262x134x47 millimetres (WxHxD)), the Simatic IPC427C fits into small control boxes or directly into a machine. It can be installed in various ways such as on a DIN rail, on a wall, or in book-mounting style.
With a back-to-front size of only 60 millimetres, the Simatic HMI IPC477C Panel PC requires 20% less depth for mounting than its predecessor. Possessing three free PCI104 expansion slots, the device is available with touchscreens of sizes 12, 15 and 19 inches. Versions featuring 12 and 15 inch fronts with keys are currently being developed. For mounting on a support arm or stand, a version with all-round IP65 protection and a 15 or 19 inch touch display can be supplied.
The new industrial PCs can be delivered with the energy-saving processors up to Intel Core2 Duo (2x 1.2 gigahertz). The main memory can be increased to up to four gigabytes. A solid state drive (SSD) with 32 gigabytes, or up to two Compact Flash Cards (CFC) with 8 gigabytes, each guarantee high system availability. The devices feature four USB 2.0 ports, two 10/100/1000 MB/s Ethernet terminals and an optional Profibus connection as interfaces. The Simatic HMI IPC477C provides a Profinet interface with three ports, a feature which will soon also be available for the Simatic IPC427C.
